Experience teaching at small local schools and foster good relationships with the children as you assist with extracurricular activities and inspire them to achieve their full potential and broaden their perspectives through creatively structured lessons.
Most people in Nepal can't afford to travel, and in the villages there is little chance of contact with the outside world. Foreign teachers enable students to form relationships with someone from another background and culture, and the teachers can learn different teaching methods and techniques. You will mainly assist the regular school teacher and so do not need to have any teaching background.

Through our education project we just not only teach the course but it brings positive change in them which help the children to be self motivated and independent. Volunteers will teach and educate basic/conversational English and other subjects of your choice to children from different age groups (5 to 16yrs.) with different capabilities. You will teach at small local schools and foster good relationships with the children as you assist with extracurricular activities and inspire them to achieve their full potential and broaden their perspectives through creatively structured lessons.

You will also teach and educate children from different age groups and with different learning capacities. You are free to use different methods to teach but you can use the course book as reference or educate children through conversational and spoken English. During your time there you can teach them different subjects e.g. mathematics, history, science, geography, computer, technologies, music and other subjects, arts and crafts, different educational games, spoken and conversational English, personal development, environment awareness, general health and safety and so on. All higher education in Nepal is in English, so it is vitally important that children must learn English to continue further higher education. A trained teacher is committed to raising standards in schools in Nepal, and with an adult literacy rate of 67% there is plenty of room for improvement.

During the project, you will gain valuable experience and learn by observing the procedures of the in-house teachers. The project can take place in either government, private or community schools around Pokhara.

The schools usually have a very dull curriculum, so out-of-the-box activities and creative experiences such as sports or games are more than welcome and really appreciated by the children. It's a good idea to bring posters, pictures, music tapes and so on to brighten up lessons.

About Your Location

Pokhara ticks all the right boxes, with spectacular scenery, adventure activities and food choices galore. The scene is a chilled-out version of Thamel, stretching along the shore of a tranquil lake with bobbing paddle boats. You can enjoy a clear view of the snow-capped mountains, the majestic Himalayas, just twenty or so kilometres away. But there’s much more to Pokhara than its laid-back charm. It also boasts a boom in adventure sports as it is arguably the best paragliding venue in the world and is surrounded by white-water rivers. The city is also the gateway to the world-famous treks in and around the Annapurna range and beyond.

Aims & Objectives

To help the kids grow in their confidence and learn better English which will help them in many ways in the future.

Weekly Schedule & Activities

Introduction Day
Your project starts with an introduction day in Kathmandu on Monday, including cultural "do's and don'ts", safety concerns, as well as some basic local language lessons. On Tuesday, you will be transferred to Pokhara and picked up at the Bus Station in Pokhara upon your arrival. You will start the project on Wednesday.

Monday to Friday
Volunteers teach four to five lessons a day from Monday to Friday from 10:00 until 16:00. There are on average 25 students in a class. Lunch will be provided at the school. The local schools usually have a rather dull curriculum so out-of-the-box activities and creative experiences such as sports and games are more than welcome and really appreciated by the children. It's also a good idea to bring posters, pictures, music tapes and so on to brighten up the lessons.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

Optional Culture Week

This program can also include a Culture Week which is highly recommended but not mandatory - just inform your travel advisor if you wish to include it. During the Culture Week, you will learn about Nepalese culture through a series of introductory culture classes which are designed to help you develop your Nepalese language skills and deepen your understanding of the Nepalese way of life complete with details on rituals and customs. You will learn about Nepal's history and the religious influences that have shaped it. Moreover, we will pay a visit to the local shops and markets that will get you learning as you go with the local culture and how to become part of it. As part of your city tour and orientation, you will also visit some amazing sites such as the temple of Swoyambhunath: one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Kathmandu.
