Jaume I or the Liceu Cathedral was built between the years 1298 and 1448, on a sacred site. Previously, a Roman chapel and a mosque stood here. The cathedral is the most striking building in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic), and its architectural style is a beautiful blend of medieval and Renaissance architecture. The church itself has several small chapels with finely decorated altars. Be sure to see the crypt, beneath the high altar, where the city’s patron saint, Santa Eulalia, lies in an alabaster tomb. Near the apse (the church’s rounded choir area), you can take an elevator up to the cathedral’s roof, from where there is an incredible view over Barcelona. Adjacent to the church is a cloister with a lovely garden.
