You will be picked up from the Yogyakarta airport on Day 1 and transferred to your local homestay. Tour the Borobudur Temple at sunrise on Day 2, followed by a village bicycle tour and a visit to the Ullen Sentalu Museum. Get back on the bike on Day 3 to discover the local ceramics artisans in nearby towns. Refresh yourself with a swim at a secret waterfall and learn the art of Javanese archery before ending your day with a street food tour. Discover the Sultan’s Palace and Water Castle on the morning of Day 4 before enjoying a Javanese cooking class and a tour of a local animal shelter. End your cultural experience on Day 5 with an airport drop-off.
Day by Day Itinerary:
Day 1: Yogyakarta Airport Pick-Up
Today you will be picked up at the Yogyakarta airport upon arrival and transferred to your homestay, where you will meet your host family. Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure to relax, explore, and get settled into beautiful Java. Overnight in Yogyakarta homestay.
Day 2: Borobudur Sunrise Tour - Village Bicycle Tour - Visit Ullen Sentalu Museum (B/L)
Enjoy a guided tour of Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist temple, as the sun rises. Discover this architectural masterpiece in the magical early-morning light and learn all about its incredible history. Follow your temple experience with a 3 - 3.5 hour bicycle ride around the villages of Borobudur, where the myriad engineers, cooks, laborers and teams working to build Borobudur lived during the 9th century. The bicycle tour takes you through scenic countryside trails, rice paddy fields and narrow alleyways that connect local village neighborhoods, giving you an amazing insight into daily life in Java. Finish the day’s activities with a visit to the Ullen Sentalu Museum before transferring to your homestay for overnight.
Day 3: Ceramics Village Bicycle Tour - Secret Waterfall - Javanese Archery - Street Food Tour (L/D)
Discover a maze of bike trails that allow you to get a glimpse of local life deep in the villages and open countryside around Yogyakarta. The first destination of today’s bike tour is the village of Kasongan, famous for its ceramics. Here you can enjoy a ceramics workshop from a master potter who will show you traditional techniques. The trail then continues through rice paddy fields and surrounding towns before a slight up hill climb to reach a stunning hidden waterfall. This part of the tour will allow you to relax and cool off and even challenge yourself to some cliff-diving!
Next you will discover the unique art of Javanese archery, or Jemparingan. First practiced by knights and nobility of the kingdom, Jemparingan today is embraced by the local community of Langenastro. Come and join us in this unique heritage where our host community will introduce you to Jemparingan and the philosophy behind it, followed by a meditation and warm up before you get introduced to the technique. Once familiar with how to shoot in the unique style of Jemparingan, you’re all set to take aim and release some arrows!
The last activity of the day is a backstreet walking food tour provides a comprehensive look into the street food scene in Yogyakarta. Your guide will show you the favourite local spots and stalls where you will find the best the city has to offer as you pass by historical attractions. Overnight in Yogyakarta homestay.
Day 4: Sultan Palace - Water Castle - Cooking Class - Kopi Luwak Tour - Local Market (L)
This morning’s tour of the Sultan Palace and Water Castle is designed to give you a condensed journey through Javanese history. Our guide is well-equipped with visual aids, extensive knowledge, and underground stories of kings and queens that have been kept secret from mainstream history.
Next you will head to a local home for a Javanese cooking class. You will be able to choose dishes that interest you most from a list of local delicacies and learn how to make them yourself! Javanese households typically purchase fresh ingredients from the local market every morning, and then cook and serve them in the afternoon for lunch with the family. Our tour will follow the same ritual, where a local market visit will be followed by a cooking class in the kitchen of our enthusiastic host. A recipe book prepared by the host will also be shared at the end of the class to give you the opportunity to recreate Javanese dishes back home.
After enjoying some time to digest, our last activity of the day is a visit to a local Kopi Luwak facility, where you'll learn about the process behind this special coffee and even get to try the unique tasting coffee - which commands a very premium price. Overnight in your Yogyakarta homestay.
Day 5: Yogyakarta Airport Drop-Off
