Embark on this 17-day adventure across Mexico to visit amazing archaeological sites within beautiful landscapes and to discover indigenous communities’ way of life. Start off in Mexico City with a tour to the impressive Teotihuacan Pyramids before traveling to the colorful Oaxaca. There, enjoy the spectacular natural surroundings of Hierve el Agua, visit the great ruins of Monte Alban and Mitla, and mingle with locals at an indigenous town. Head to the Pacific coast and spend 2 days relaxing on the beautiful beaches of Puerto Escondido, one of Mexico's most popular surfing paradise. Later, in San Cristobal, get to know the fascinating lifestyle of natives by visiting indigenous villages and take a boat ride through the stunning Sumidero Canyon. Make a stop at Agua Azul and then discover the mystical Palenque Ruins and the Yaxchilan and Bonampak archaeological sites deep into the jungle. From Merida, visit the amazing Uxmal Pyramids and the captivating Chichen Itza ruins. Relax in the Caribbean beach town of Tulum and marvel at its archaeological site, located on a cliff overlooking the turquoise ocean, before finishing in Cancun.
Day by Day Itinerary:
Day 1 - Airport Pickup in Mexico City
You will be picked up from the Mexico City airport upon arrival.
Day 2 – Day trip to the Teotihuacan Pyramids
Visit the impressive Teotihuacan Pyramids and discover the local culture on this off-the-beaten path trip. You will be accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide throughout the day. First head out of Mexico City and wander around the Teotihuacan Pyramids and feel on top of the world as you climb the Sun Pyramid. Then explore a local town and visit a factory where locals make products with cactus plants. Visit a local family-run Pulqueria and sample the sacred Aztec drink ‘pulque’. At night, enjoy a delicious dinner at a local family home and experience their way of life! Overnight in Mexico City.
Day 3 - Public Bus from Mexico City to Oaxaca
You will take a 6-hour first class public bus to Oaxaca and have a free afternoon to visit this colorful colonial town.
Day 4 - Day Trip to Hierve el Agua, Mitla and Tule
Enjoy the spectacular natural surroundings of Hierve el Agua, then visit the ruins of Mitla, the 2,000-year-old Tule tree and finally, taste some local liquor at the Traditional Mezcal Workshop on a day trip with a guide to explain every unique detail.
Day 5 - Day Trip to Monte Alban & Night bus to Puerto Escondido
Be amazed by the historical ruins of Monte Alban, an archaeological site with a spectacular mountain top location overlooking the valleys of Oaxaca, and mingle with locals at an indigenous town on a day trip. Then take a night bus to Puerto Escondido.
Day 6 - Free day in Puerto Escondido
Relax on the beautiful beaches of Mexico's most popular surfing paradise, Puerto Escondido, and try your luck at a surfing on your own.
Day 7 - Free day in Puerto Escondido & Night bus to San Cristobal
Spend another day on the Pacific coast and take a night bus to San Cristobal.
Day 8 – Free day in San Cristobal
Enjoy a free day in the picturesque colonial town of San Cristobal to walk along the cobblestone streets and mingle with local people in the marketplace on your own.
Day 9 - Sumidero Canyon Day Tour
Travel to the delightful 'pueblo magico' of Chiapa de Corzo and take a 2-hour boat ride through the stunning Sumidero Canyon. If you are lucky you may see local wildlife such as crocodiles, monkeys and birds and a great variety of plants and trees. Your guide will point out fascinating geological formations within the canyon. Return to San Cristobal in the afternoon and enjoy its cobblestone streets and cozy cafes.
Day 10 - Indigenous Communities Day Tour
Get to know the fascinating lifestyle of natives by visiting the indigenous villages of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan on a day trip with a local guide.
Day 11 - Day Trip to Agua Azul, Misol-Ha & Palenque
Depart San Cristobal early in the morning for a fantastic day trip. This tour will take you to the fascinating archaeological site of Palenque, set deep in the jungle, as well as to two breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls; Agua Azul, famous for its translucent blue waters, and Misol-Ha where you can take a refreshing dip. End the day in Palenque.
Day 12 - 2D/1N Trip to Yaxchilan and Bonampak
Immerse yourself deep in the Lacandon jungle on a 2-day trip to see the impressive Yaxchilan and Bonampak archaeological sites, which are only accessible by boat. These remote and mystical archaeological sites are both unique for their architecture, history, murals, engravings and lintels. Learn the local Mayan way of life by visiting an indigenous community and experiencing the traditions and customs first-hand. Spend the night in a rustic camp or cabins at the Lacanja Community.
Day 13 - 2D/1N Trip to Yaxchilan and Bonampak & Night bus to Merida
Go for a jungle walk in Lacanja and swim in one of many refreshing streams in the morning, before taking your return transfer to Palenque. You'll arrive in Palenque in the evening and connect with your night bus to Merida.
Day 14 - Uxmal & Kabah Ancient Ruins Day Tour
We will pick you up from your accommodation and drive you an hour south to the spectacular Uxmal ruins, where we will walk around for a few hours. Uxmal is a grand model that depicts the classic Maya architecture. Designated as a UNESCO world heritage site, this outstanding temple of the mystic is one of the most outstanding architecture of the Maya culture. The brilliance of the Puuc style architecture is clearly exemplified at the Nuns Quadrangle. The Governor's Palace, the Ball Court, as well as House of the Tortoises are some of the most stunning Mayan buildings to watch out for.
After the tour of Uxmal, we will have lunch (not included) and then make our way 30 minutes south to explore the Kabah Pyramids, another classic Maya archaeological site, known for the temple of the rain god chaac also known as codz poop (rolled matting). It also boasts of a number of palaces, low stone buildings, and step pyramid temples. In the early afternoon, we will make our way back to Merida and bring you back to your hostel.
Day 15 - Chichen Itza Day Trip & Transfer to Tulum
Depart Merida today for a day trip to the captivating archaeological site of Chichen Itza, one of the new 7 wonders of the world. Then continue your trip to the Caribbean beach town of Tulum where you will be dropped off for the night.
*NOTE REGARDING LUNCH: We will make a stop for a buffet lunch at a cost of $150 pesos to be paid locally.
Day 16 - Free Day in Tulum & Transfer to Cancun
Take advantage of a free day to relax on Tulum's stunning beaches or take a trip on your own to see the superb Tulum archaeological site, located on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Take an afternoon bus transfer to Cancun.
Day 17 - Cancun Airport Transfer for flight back home
You will be transferred to the Cancun airport in order to catch your flight back home.
