Trakai is the old capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania – one of the great powers of the Middle Ages, which stretched from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. The city is in a lake area, and the beautiful landscape has been a source of inspiration for many Lithuanian poets. Today, Trakai is one of the most popular recreational areas near the capital. In Trakai, after many years of restoration work, the old royal castle can now be seen as it looked in the 14th century, located on a small island in Lake Galve. For centuries, this fortress was the residence of successive generations of grand dukes.
