The twelve-sided Golden Tower (Torre del Oro) by the Guadalquivir River dates back to 1220 and was originally part of the Moorish fortification known as the Reales Alcázares. The tower functioned as the endpoint of the city wall and as a defensive structure for the harbor. It is called the Golden Tower because it was originally covered with golden ceramic tiles that reflected the sun’s rays. Today, the tower also houses a small maritime museum.
