Tea, which came to England from Holland in the mid-1600s, is still a significant part of English culture. In the past, it was a daily ritual for London’s upper class to enjoy afternoon tea in the extravagant salons of grand hotels. Today, it’s more of a special indulgence reserved for special occasions. Afternoon tea is usually served between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM, often accompanied by small cucumber sandwiches and warm scones.
You can enjoy a delicious afternoon tea at cafés such as Le Pain Quotidien, the organic café in Whole Foods Market, and St. James’ Tearoom in Fortnum and Mason.
